When Zaid Garcia from Texas was two years old, a candle fell onto his bed, igniting the bedding. No one believed the little boy would survive. But he did.
– Now, I want to share my story to inspire others and show them that miracles exist, says Zaid in a YouTube video.
– When I was two and a half years old, my mom put me to bed, and a candle fell and the bed caught fire. I was severely injured. I’ve had so many surgeries that I can’t even remember how many. And I’ll probably have more skin transplants in the future. They amputated both of my hands, and they took all my fingers too. I have both my legs, and feet. I have five toes on the left and one on the right. I have one toe, Zaid continues.
Hopes to Regain Sight
The doctors were sure the little boy wouldn’t survive. But he did. Now, the 16-year-old hopes he will be able to see again. Zaid and his family have set up a GoFundMe page to raise money for the operation.
– The doctors sealed my eyes under the skin. I don’t know why they didn’t just remove them. Maybe because they knew it might be possible for me to see in the future, says the hopeful teenager.
– So now, I hope that I can see again. I have been blind since the accident. If I could have this operation, it would be the first time I could see properly. To see my family again after 14 years would be great, says Zaid, admitting that what he is most excited about is seeing his best friend, Julia.
– I would like to see her beauty, I think, he says.
A Difficult Childhood
Today, Zaid’s family has moved to the USA, where he attends a school for the blind. Today, he is doing well, but growing up wasn’t always easy.
– People are scared of me because of my appearance. And when I was younger, I tried to commit suicide. It was hard to fit in at school and make friends. I just wanted to be accepted, he says.
Appointed Honorary Police Officer
And now, the police in Texas have realized a dream he’s had since he was 10 years old. Zaid has been made an honorary member of the police force.
– This is one of the best days of my life. I told my mom I couldn’t believe it myself. Since my accident happened, I’ve been interested in protecting people. So my dream was to be a policeman, says the proud boy to Daily Mail.
