Am I Selfish If I Spend My Children’s Inheritance?

A father has caused major conflict within his family after deciding to spend the inheritance he received from his parents on himself, rather than saving it for his children.

The story, shared on Reddit, has sparked a heated debate and revolves around a man with three adult children: Jason (25), Monica (30), and Veronica (32).

After receiving a significant inheritance from his parents, both he and the rest of the family assumed that the money would eventually be passed down to his children. According to their cultural tradition, children are expected to care for their aging parents, just as he had done for his own, who required 24/7 care in the final years of their lives.

A few months ago, he jokingly mentioned that someone should start planning where he would live when he got older. To his surprise, his children responded that they had no intention of taking care of him, citing their own financial struggles and the rising cost of living.

A Painful Realization

This response deeply hurt him. Realizing he could not rely on his children for care in his old age, he decided to start planning for his own future. He moved a large portion of the inheritance into his personal savings and chose to spend the money traveling while he was still healthy.

«Since then, I’ve made the decision to start preparing for my old age. I transferred much of the inheritance into my savings account and plan to take trips I’ve always wanted to go on while I’m still relatively young and fit. I intend to fund this with my inheritance,» he wrote.

When he told Monica that he was going to Mexico and would be using the inheritance money to pay for the trip, she was outraged. She called him “selfish” and accused him of punishing them for not following family traditions.

A Family Feud Over Money

Monica then told her siblings, who also reacted with anger. They argued that he was “stealing” money that their grandparents had promised to them. Now, all three children refuse to speak to him.

«After that, Monica called her siblings, who then called me to tell me that if I start using the inheritance to live a lavish lifestyle, I am robbing them of the money their grandparents promised them. They are all very angry with me and refuse to talk to me to reach an agreement,» he wrote.

Many online commenters have sided with the father, saying he has every right to spend his inheritance as he pleases.

Is it selfish to spend an inheritance before the children get their share, or is prioritizing one’s own happiness the right choice? 🤔 Comment on our Facebookpage.
