Following the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in February 2023, rescue teams from around the world mobilized to search for survivors. Among the many heroes was a four-legged lifesaver named Proteo.
The German Shepherd was part of the Mexican rescue team sent to Turkey to assist in locating survivors beneath the rubble. Proteo and his handlers worked tirelessly through the ruins, and thanks to his extraordinary instincts and training, the dog helped save more than 40 lives.
“Proteo showed incredible bravery and dedication,” wrote the Mexican Ministry of National Defense in a statement after the mission. “He was a faithful and heroic companion who fulfilled his duty until the very end.”
Sadly, Proteo passed away during the mission. The Ministry has not released details about the cause of death, but the harsh conditions and intense workload are believed to have contributed.
The dog has received widespread recognition both in Mexico and internationally. Children have drawn pictures, written letters, and held ceremonies to honor his memory. On social media, thousands have paid tribute to the heroic dog who gave everything to save others.
“Thank you, Proteo. You were a true hero,” one message reads.
His story is a reminder of the vital role rescue dogs play in disaster zones. With their sharp senses and loyal hearts, they search where machines cannot reach — and they never give up.
