Meghan Markle’s father, 81-year-old Thomas Markle, is in a hospital in the Philippines after a dramatic and life-threatening operation. Doctors were forced to amputate his left leg below the knee after a blood clot cut off circulation and caused the foot to turn black.
According to his son, Thomas Jr., everything happened very quickly. His father experienced acute pain, and the foot changed color before the circulation disappeared entirely. He was first taken to a local hospital before a doctor transferred him to a larger hospital in Cebu, where his condition was immediately deemed critical.
– Dad is very brave. His foot first turned blue and then black. It happened very quickly. I took him to a local hospital; they did scans and an ultrasound and said the leg needed to be amputated, he says according to the Daily Mail.
The son says the doctors gave them a brutal but clear message.
– There was no choice. I was told the leg had to be removed, and that it was a matter of life and death.
Markle was then taken straight into a three-hour operation. He is now in the intensive care unit in a stable but vulnerable condition.

Doctors: The next few days are critical
After the amputation, Thomas still requires close monitoring. Doctors are also treating a new blood clot in his thigh, and the risk of infections such as sepsis is high for patients his age.
– One of the doctors said the next two or three days are critical.
In other words: the situation can change quickly.
A father–daughter rift that casts a long shadow
While their father is fighting for his life, neither Meghan Markle nor Prince Harry has commented on the incident. Thomas and Meghan have had a strained relationship since 2018, when paparazzi photos and health issues prevented him from attending his daughter’s wedding. They have not seen each other since.
For Thomas, the longing for both his daughter and his grandchildren has been profound. He has previously expressed fear that he might die without ever meeting them.

In January, he moved to the Philippines hoping for a quieter life—far from TV interviews, documentaries, and constant media coverage of the Sussexes that followed him everywhere in the U.S. and Mexico.
A family hoping for compassion
His son, Thomas Jr., says the family has been touched by all the messages they have received following the dramatic operation. He also directs a quiet plea toward Meghan.
– I would ask Meghan to show him compassion during this very difficult time.
For Thomas himself, the wish has been the same for years: to meet his grandchildren before it is too late.
Doctors are now working to stabilize the wound, prevent infection, and ensure he gets through the next few days. But the uncertainty is significant, and the family is closely by his side.
Meanwhile, Meghan recently released new clips from her Netflix Christmas special—while her father lies in intensive care. The reactions in comment sections around the world have been plentiful.
