Known for his razor-sharp humor, ruthless jokes, and controversial stand-up shows, Ricky Gervais also harbors a huge heart for animals. Recently, he has touched thousands after donating nearly £2.5 million to animal welfare organizations.
The donation comes from the profits of his latest stand-up tour and will be distributed among 22 different animal welfare organizations. Gervais himself stated that the money is meant as a tribute to the spirit of Christmas — and to the animals he is so passionate about.
“Merry Christmas, little creatures,” he shared on Facebook along with a list of organizations receiving support.
He also reflected humorously on his decision: “My mom always used to say, ‘You can’t take it with you.’ No, I cannot. But I could have bought 30 speedboats and raced them in the Mediterranean with my friends. Anyway — too late now.”
Millions for Animals in Need
Among the beneficiaries are small local rescue centers and international organizations working under extremely challenging conditions. Several British animal welfare organizations will receive between £100,000 and £150,000 each, while the organization Nowzad — which works on animal welfare in Afghanistan and Ukraine — receives over £130,000.
One of the supported groups is a rescue center that assists paralyzed dogs by providing them with specialized wheelchairs. The funds will go directly to operational costs and veterinary expenses — effectively meaning new lives for many animals.
A Remarkable Contribution
The founder of one recipient organization describes the gift as life-changing. “This is absolutely incredible. I think Ricky was looking for an organization that does specialized work and really makes a difference.”
Animal organizations working in war-torn areas have also noted that the support comes at a critical time, where the need for urgent veterinary assistance is greater than ever.
A Well-Known Animal Advocate
For many years, Ricky Gervais has been open about his strong commitment to animal welfare. He is also associated with the dog in the Netflix series After Life, a character that moved viewers worldwide. When the dog behind the role passed away earlier this year, Gervais shared a touching tribute.
In addition to his successes with The Office and Extras, for many, it is his fight for the animals that has earned him a special place in the hearts of the audience.
