One of the most legendary figures in film history is gone. The French actress, singer and animal rights activist Brigitte Bardot has died at the age of 91, according to multiple international media outlets.
Bardot was never just a movie star. In the 1950s and 60s, she became a global phenomenon – a symbol of freedom, sensuality and rebellion in a time when women were rarely allowed that kind of space. At the same time, she sparked debate and controversy that followed her for decades.
Became a global sensation overnight
Her international breakthrough came with the film And God Created Woman, which turned Bardot into one of the world’s biggest sex symbols and forever changed how women were portrayed on screen. She often played provocative and emotionally charged roles, including performances in Love Is My Profession and A Very Private Affair.
During her roughly 20-year career, Bardot worked with some of France’s most celebrated filmmakers, including Jean-Luc Godard and Louis Malle. She also released music, with several songs becoming popular far beyond France.

Walked away at the height of fame
In 1973, while still at the peak of her career, Bardot made the shocking decision to retire completely from acting. She turned her back on the spotlight and dedicated her life to animal welfare, later founding the Brigitte Bardot Foundation, which has worked internationally to protect animals for decades.
Her commitment to animals earned admiration worldwide, but her outspoken nature also kept her in the headlines for less flattering reasons.
A life marked by controversy
Bardot was repeatedly fined and convicted in France for racist remarks. In 2004, she was found guilty over hateful statements made about Muslims in her book Un Cri dans le silence (2003). These controversies deeply divided public opinion, but never erased her cultural impact.
She remained one of France’s most talked-about public figures until the very end.
Furious over false death rumors
As recently as October, Bardot reacted angrily after false reports of her death spread online. She addressed the rumors herself in a blunt statement.
– I don’t know who the idiot is who started these false rumors about my death tonight, but know that I am fine and have no intention of disappearing.
Now, however, the world has truly lost a woman who left an undeniable mark on film, fashion and popular culture. Loved by many, criticized by others – and impossible to ignore.
