The world-renowned chef and TV star, Gordon Ramsay, shares an urgent message after surviving a severe bike accident in Connecticut earlier this week.
«I had a really nasty accident, and honestly, I’m lucky to be here,» says Ramsay (57) in a video he posted on Instagram.
In the video, Ramsay displays his heavily bruised chest to emphasize the importance of always wearing a helmet when cycling.
«I don’t care how short the ride is. Helmets may cost money, but they are crucial,» he stresses.
Ramsay particularly urges parents to ensure that their children always wear helmets, even for short trips.
Gratitude for the Medical Team
Ramsay thanks the «incredible» doctors and nurses who treated him at the hospital after the accident. He also shared before-and-after photos. The first photo shows him standing next to his road bike, dressed in cycling gear, sunglasses, and a helmet.
The second photo, taken after the accident, shows a helmet shattered into pieces and a cycling jersey with a large hole in the chest.
In the caption, Ramsay expresses his gratitude for the helmet that saved his life:
«I have a very important message for all fathers out there… WEAR A HELMET! This week, I had a really nasty accident while cycling in Connecticut. I’m okay and haven’t broken any bones or suffered serious injuries, but I’m quite bruised and look like a purple potato.»
He continues:
«I am grateful for all the doctors, nurses, and staff at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London who took care of me and checked me out, but most grateful for my helmet that saved my life. Have a great Father’s Day and stay safe. Gx.»
A Passion for Cycling
Ramsay has long been an avid cyclist and triathlete. In 2014, he spoke with The Telegraph about his love for cycling and triathlons. One of the benefits of cycling, according to Ramsay, is discovering small cafes and bakeries in the villages he visits on his rides.
With his recent experience, Ramsay wants to remind everyone of the critical importance of wearing a helmet, no matter how experienced a cyclist you are. «The helmet saved my life,» he concludes.
